Summary
PCNL (keyhole removal of kidney stones through the back or side) starts with a needle passed into the kidney. That entry is usually guided by X-ray (fluoroscopy). Standard ultrasound probes guide the needle at a steep angle, which makes it hard to line up with the part of the kidney being targeted.
This video abstract describes a method using a hockey-stick shaped ultrasound probe with needle guides at 5 and 25 degrees, with the patient lying on their back. The entry path is planned from CT images and ultrasound, the needle goes in under ultrasound, and X-ray is used briefly to confirm it.
The abstract reports shorter operating time, less radiation exposure, and a high rate of successful entry on the first needle pass with this method.
