A Single Stage Procedure without Fecal Diversion for Extraperitoneal Rectovesical Injury: A Case Report

Penetrating injuries of the rectum often injure the bladder too, and combined injuries carry a risk of an abnormal connection (fistula) forming between the rectum and the urinary tract. The usual approach includes a temporary stoma to divert stool.

This report describes a patient with injuries to the rectum, both walls of the bladder, and the right ureter. All were repaired in one operation without a stoma: the injured rectum was resected and rejoined, the bladder was repaired, and the right ureter was reimplanted. The authors report no complications after surgery.
